Textbooks. In general textbooks provide a good overview of the fundamentals of group work. Included here is a selection of recent books with a range of perspectives that are generally well-regarded and widely used and one classic early text (Wilson and Ryland 1949). Factors that influence group dynamics include the social status of participants, their assigned or adopted roles, and patterns of communication and dominance that develop within the group. Groups can be task oriented and have social purposes, and the effectiveness of a group often depends on the balance it strikes between these competing goals.
The conceptualization of group dynamics presented in this chapter is based on the work of Toseland and Rivas (2001), but it also draws heavily on the work of these schol- ars.. Social dynamics such as procrastination, social loafing, and free riding often occur with group work projects.
